Samhain is the fifth painting from the Autumn Equinox & Mabon series.
Samhain is celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome the harvest and usher in the dark half of the year.
The All Saints' Day celebration was also called All-hallowmas. The night before is the night of Samhain in the Celtic religion. It was called All-Hallows Eve, nowadays Halloween.
During Samhain, the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world fall, allowing interaction between humans and inhabitants of the spirit world.
If you look closely at the painting, you may be able to see this interaction.
Acrylic on canvas, 100cm x 100cm x 4cm.
Background to this series:
The summer of 2021 was coming to an end, the autumn equinox was approaching. On the autumn equinox the sun rises exactly in the east and sets exactly in the west.
Mabon is celebrated on the day of the autumnal equinox, this year on September 22. Mabon, it’s rituals, the autumn colours, the self-reflection and awareness that play an important role in Mabon, gave me a tremendous inspiration. Too much inspiration for just one painting, so it become a whole series of paintings.
My feelings in combination with colours and patterns that go with Mabon and autumn , I have put in a series of abstract paintings, each painting with its own inspirational background, but all related to this time of year.
