Inspired by the plant Astilboides tabularis which is native to northern China, Manchuria and North Korea, where it grows in moist woodlands and near lakes and streams. It has very large scalloped green leaves that can reach to 80cm across which develop on long stalks rising up to 90cm from the earth. You could almost use it as an actual umbrella, because its large leaves are almost perfectly round like an umbrella. Tabularis is Latin for table, nicely describing the leaf’s shape.

Normally leaves are attached to a branch or trunk via a petiole, but the stem of this plant comes straight from the rhizomes in the ground. The place where the stem is attached to the leaf is special. Usually the stem is on the edge of the leave, but this plant has the stem in the centre of the leave. Because of this shape, the plant does indeed resemble a side table or umbrella.
