Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Famous for his paintings and his quotes. While working on this painting for a client who specifically requested orange and yellow tones in the painting, I remembered this quote of Picasso “Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun.”

As an abstract painter I do not strive to paint a recognisable object, like the sun. I strive to image feelings and emotions holistically in a painting, that might be related to an object. I want to paint the experience of the power and the energy of the sun, life that sprouts from this energy or the great feeling of the first sunrays on my face during spring.

I found inspiration in these words of Picasso, even if I did not transform the sun in a yellow spot, nor turned a yellow spot into the sun  (;-)

Normally leaves are attached to a branch or trunk via a petiole, but the stem of this plant comes straight from the rhizomes in the ground. The place where the stem is attached to the leaf is special. Usually the stem is on the edge of the leave, but this plant has the stem in the centre of the leave. Because of this shape, the plant does indeed resemble a side table or umbrella.
