Description

At the science museum of Granada I learned of the Nebra Sky disk, the oldest concrete depiction of the cosmos. It was the inspiration for this painting.

The Nebra sky disc is a bronze disc with a diameter of around 30 cm with a blue-green patina and inlaid with gold symbols. These symbols represent the Sun or full moon, a lunar crescent, and stars (including a cluster of seven stars; the Pleiades). The two golden arcs along the sides mark the angle between the solstices.

The disc has been attributed to a site in present-day Germany near Nebra and was dated by researchers to the Bronze Age (2300-1800 BC), although a later dating to the Iron Age has also been proposed.  The Nebra sky disc features the oldest concrete depiction of the cosmos yet known from anywhere in the world.

The disc may be an astronomical instrument as well as an item of religious significance. The blue-green patina of the bronze may have been an intentional part of the original artefact.

The find reconfirms that the people of the European Bronze Age made a close observation of the yearly course of the Sun, and the angle between its rising and setting points at the summer and winter solstices.
