Description

A young couple visited me because they were looking for custom Statement Art for their home. They described their house, the colours of their interior, the walls and how the sun visits the living room.

We also came to talk about good memories that give happy feelings and if/how these can translate into an abstract painting. Their eyes lit up as they talked about their memories of their past vacation to Pulau Padar.

After they left I looked up this treasure island, read about its steep volcanic hills, the grass savannahs that colour soft green to ochre yellow with the change of the seasons, and beautiful deep bays with beaches in white and grey sands. I gazed at pictures of the outlines of coral reefs in the turquoise sea that can be seen from the top of the island’s hills, home to rich sea life, including manta rays, dolphins and turtles.

I became fascinated by this island form a distant region and drew an exotic inspiration from it for the colours and textures in this painting. Exoticism is “the charm of the unfamiliar”, which perfectly describes my inspiration for this work of art, commissioned by Mark & Mayke.

Mixed media on canvas, 140cm x 80cm x 4cm.
